Color With Me for Boston Harbor

Looking for something to do during February vacation week? Join our Color With Me for Boston Harbor workshop and meet a real ARTivist!

Grab your art supplies and join us for PangeaSeed Foundation’s “Color With Me for the Sea” workshop, where you will meet a real “ARTivist,” an artist + activist whose work inspires protection of our environment! Using Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans’ Boston Coloring Companion booklet, we’ll color “The Calling,” a collaborative mural by Julz Roth and Cedric “Vise1” Douglas, and learn about the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans Boston public art project.

You’ll also meet another one of our favorite ARTivists, Alyssa Irizarry from Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs, a local organization engaging young people in ocean conservation through the arts. Alyssa will lead us in conversation with Julz and tell us about the ways YOU can become an ARTivist in your community too! We’ll talk about coloring, the story of “The Calling” mural, and learn how we can all listen to the call of the sea!

While the weather is chilly, we can still connect with the harbor! Visit the Sea Walls murals around the neighborhood, including “The Calling” by Julz & Vise1, located at 256 Marginal Street at the HarborArts Outdoor Gallery in Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina. Other Sea Walls Boston murals can be found around the shipyard, on the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway, and at Bremen Park Condominiums at 260 Bremen Street in East Boston.

Color With Me for Boston Harbor is a free and family-friendly virtual event.

About the ARTivist: Sea Walls Boston participating ARTivist Julia “Julz” Roth is a Boston-based artist and arts therapist. She finds meaning in assembling the fragments of the human experience. From large scale murals to mixed media paintings and collage, Julz works to transform old narratives into new creations. Her work explores themes such as human behavior, cultural patterns, identity, emotion, and femininity through color, texture and form. She works with a variety of mediums including spray paint, acrylic, newspaper, found objects, pastels and other recyclables. Julz received her B.A. double majoring in Transpersonal Psychology and Visual Arts, from Burlington College in Burlington, Vermont in 2009 and went on to receive her M.A. in Expressive Art Therapy from Lesley University, in 2011. Since then Julz has been using art to activate communities and evoke creative expression.

About Coloring with Me for the Sea: In 2020, as a direct result of the impact of COVID-19, PangeaSeed Foundation launched “A Creative Coloring Companion to Help Save our Seas” accompanied by “Color with Me for the Sea”, a weekly virtual educational coloring session featuring science communicators, marine scientists, and Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans alumni artists. This eight volume booklet, free to the public, featured five original coloring pages in each volume accompanied by information on marine environmental issues, action steps, and an artist statement. Designed specifically for students learning at home, the coloring companion was a refreshing environmental educational resource for teachers and parents in search of inspiring remote-learning teaching materials. About Sea Walls BostonIn September 2020, the first Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans project in the Northeast region of the United States was installed in Boston, Massachusetts. In collaboration with the local community, we created a series of culturally sensitive public artworks that raise environmental awareness and add vibrancy to a community under threat of major coastal flooding and storm surge. Sea Walls is presented by Linda Cabot and produced in partnership with HarborArts.
